The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) began operating in 1926. Today, AUTh is the largest Greek university. The main campus is located in the city center and extends over an area of approximately 430,000 m2, while some of its facilities, whether educational or administrative, are located outside the campus or in other cities. In total, it includes 11 schools, consisting of 40 departments and 1 single-department school. There are 65 Clinics (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine), 314 institutionalized Laboratories and 23 studytoriums. The Central Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, one of the largest in the Balkans, together with the 47 regional libraries of the Departments and Faculties, constitute the library system of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
At the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, there are 41 undergraduate programs, 1 introductory direction (Muslim Studies) and 1 foreign language Undergraduate Program of the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences and 200 postgraduate programs in individual departments, as well as interdepartmental, interuniversity and international. In addition, significant collaborations have been established with foreign institutions for the preparation of doctoral theses with co-supervision, of Greek and foreign doctoral candidates.
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki manages a large number of research programs through the Research Committee. The Research Committee, as the University institution for the management of research and related activities, was created to meet the specific needs of research activity and, in particular, to facilitate the distinction between research and teaching work, as well as the allocation of external funding.
